Question Posted Thursday March 27 2008, 3:34 pm

I'm on birth control and I've had some issues with spotting before but not when I'm nowhere close to my period. I had sex without a condom a week ago. I took my birth control on time. 2 days later i took it 40 minutes late on accident.

is spotting a sign of pregnancy?
I know..get a pregnancy test...but I thought i'd ask before i spend $10.

i just want facts. i do not want a lecture.

I've spotted on birth control once before too. But it was actually worse. I bled like I was literally on my period, right in the middle of my pack.

I went to the health clinic to see what they had to say, and they told me what I was experiencing was called "Breakthrough Bleeding."

It can be a sign of pregnancy, but that's not always the case. It could also be some kind of an STD, or it could just be your body doing something that you just can't explain. They tested me for pregnancy/STDS, and both came up negative. (Though I could have told them that). They never really told me why I experienced that, but just to take my pills every single day, and not to skip any, because my hormones/body would react weird, hence the spot bleeding.

Minutes or even hours don't really make a difference on the effectivness of birth control. The pill pack and the doctor just tell you that because it's easier to remember to take them if you take them at the same time everyday. As long as you didn't forget to take it at all, you are fine.

I would really doubt that 40 minutes would make such a difference, and spotting can be a symptom of birth control sometimes so I would very much doubt you are pregnant.
Even if you are, a pregnancy test would not recognise it until your first missed period so I would wait until you are next due one and it should come, if it doesn't, then get a test.
Hope it helps, take care :)

Since you have had issues with spotting before,
I doubt that you are pregnant. Taking your pill
40 minutes late one time isn't a big deal.

Some women experience spotting when they
are pregnant, but so do those who aren't.
Its not a symptom of pregnancy. If
you skip your period or have other
symptoms, then take the test.
