Why is it that when someone asks a questions asking for advice they get opnions...like they get told "I DONT THINK YOU SHOULDNT BE DOING THAT", "YOUR NOT A VAGETERIAN, they dont eat fish!!!", "YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A BABY YOUR TOO YOUNG." yadah yadah yaaaah... The answers to their question for ADVICE is NOT ADVICE... if someone doesnt know the answer to give why give an anwer ESSPEICALLY one that is just rude? So im asking why is it that our columnist will give out OPINIONS instead of advice??
** and NO this does not pertain to questions like "is this hat cute????"
Thank you to all who answer

Unlike the the other two that said advice is opinion. i don't believe advice is opinion like your examples you gave. It is to a certain extent, but it's more fact than anything (like the baby thing). advice should be something you actually know and/or something you've been through. Or maybe not even that, but people do try to help, and like the other person said, you shouldn't rate down or get mad at someone for not telling you what you want to hear.
and to get your mood up on this, my own random advice...when you ask for advice, it's better you hear what you don't want to because it gets people thinking. and another thing, i'm one of those few that actaully answer if i know the question, if not, then i don't answer.
and maybe some people are just bad at giving advice or are low on common sense...who knows.
LM answered Monday March 24 2008, 8:23 pm: Advice IS opinions, essentially.
And by the way, vegetarians don't eat fish. Pescetarians do, though. So, sometimes, the columnist is actually providing factual information. And if a 16 year old girl is convinced she wants to have a child, most of us are going to say "You're just a child yourself; you're too young" because she IS. We're not going to give harmful advice or anything of that sort.
Although sometimes, yes, their opinions is in no way helpful. Just because they disagree with something doesn't make it right or wrong (which I think is what you were getting at). As for why they do that, it's just the way they are. If you see something inappropriate, file an abuse report. If they simply didn't answer your question, rate them down. But don't rate down jsut because it's not what you wanted to hear, either.
karenR answered Monday March 24 2008, 8:07 pm: Advice is mostly opinion. I think it can be
given in a way that isn't rude. If the question
isn't even answered then people should rate a
2. Ratings abuse is the biggest cause of crap answers. They get rated a 5...they feel answering
badly is OK.
If a young teen wants to have a baby, If she wants
to be anorexic, then not giving your opinion by
saying "don't do that" is being a very irresponsible
columnist. Even if they rate you low as a result.
We also have a link in the blue column for abuse reports. If you feel someone is being rude, file a
report. Rudeness is not allowed. Just expressing an opinion though is not rude. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
