I just saw Across the Universe over Spring Break and I loved it!
There were a lot of strange parts I didn't understand (such as the random circus/carnival). I know some of the weirder parts were because the characters were doing some type of drug and other strange parts were just symbolism.
Does anyone else recognize strong symbolism in the movie?
Such as when Jude is going crazy with the Strawberries? I think that symbolized blood shed in the Vietnam war.
Strawberry Fields Forever is a song about heroin, because heroin track marks are referred to at "Strawberry Feilds."
Some characters in the movie were used to represent famous people from the sixties, such as Jojo being Jimi Hendrix, and Sadie being Janis Joplin.
Also, each song in the movie relates to a character. This is the list:
Lucy - "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
Jude - "Hey Jude"
Max - "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"
Sadie - "Sexy Sadie"
Jojo - "Get Back"
Prudence - "Dear Prudence"
Dr. Robert - "Doctor Robert"
Mr. Kite - "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite"
Dan (Lucy's first boyfriend) - "Rocky Raccoon"
Molly (Jude's English girlfriend) - "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
Martha (Jude's mother) - "Martha My Dear"
Julia (Lucy's sister) - "Julia"
Rita (The Contortionist) - "Lovely Rita"
Teddy (Max's uncle) - "Teddy Boy"
In the "Dear Prudence" scene where Prudence is hiding in the closet, it is a reference to her being in the closet about her sexuality, which you knew about when she sang "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in the beginning about the female cheerleader. Strawberry fields forever was actually just a memory of John Lennon's childhood though, so I'm afraid it didn't have to do with the war. Some scenes, such as the circus one, had absolutely no relavent issues and the movie would have been fine without them, but they wanted to fit as many songs in as they could :] especially the great ones. There was SOME symbolism, but you also have to remember that most of their songs were drug influenced ;] so try not to look to deep into it. I mean, part of the greatness of their songs is judt the mystery to them. However, if you get the DVD, it has a section in the special features that explains the meanings of certain scenes. Goodluck :] [ Hitoast's advice column | Ask Hitoast A Question ]

The Beatles were a very good group that seemed to put symbolism into a good number of their songs, and they were definately not for war. Strawberry Fields, the song sung during this part, was a sort of protest against war.
If you remember I Want You, the scene with the army and Max going through the testing, you saw the army men looked fake, plastic. Basically it meant that the army was filled with people who didn't even seem human, people who were fake and cold.
