Are you using the computer or watching television 1 1/2 hours before you go to bed?

Are you doing any heavy duty reading or studying an hour before you go to bed?

Are you drinking caffeine 8 hours before you go to bed?

Are you exercising 1 hour before you go to bed?

If you are, this might be the problem...

1. Using the computer or watching tv 1 1/2 hours before you go to bed sends a signal to your brain to go into "daylight mode" because of the bright lights that you see on the computer or on the television. This causes your brain to signal to your body that it's still "day" so it's harder for your brain to get the message that it's actually night.

2. Heavy-duty reading or studying before you go to bed strains your brain - gives you headaches sometimes, too. It also makes you think about what you just got done studying or reading for the whole night, concentrating on what you just read, rather than on sleep.

3. Caffeine effects your nervous system for up to 8 hours - so it'd be a good idea not to drink any caffeinated beverages 8 hours before you go to bed.

4. Exercising before you go to bed signals to your brain and nervous system that you're still awake. When your heart is pumping at a higher rate, it sends signals to your brain that you are active, alert, and awake.

To help get to sleep, try to stay away from those 4 "sleep demons".
