Irregular period for a LONG time.

Question Posted Friday March 7 2008, 8:22 am

Alright, I'm turning 16 in June.

I first got my period when I was 13, I think it only lasted 2 days.

I didn't get it again until I was 14, and I think it ran a normal course (somewhere between 5-7 days)

Then I got it about 3 times last year, one was really heavy, the other 2 were normal. The second one was around 28 days after the first one, so I thought it had finally become regular, but the last one was a few months later.

I also got it once at the start of this year, and it was really heavy.

Anyway, my question is, it's been nearly 3 years and my period is STILL irregular. I understand when you first get it it's irregular, but after such a long time is it normal or should I go get medical advice about it?

you dont actually get "regular" periods until you are atleast in your 20's.
so dont worry about it.
what your going through is normal

well, actually mine was just like that.

like it started at 12 but then i didnt have for such a long time. then it came once in three months and its still a bit irregular (im 16).

anyways, dont worry. it happens.

but if you are really worried then write a list of when you have it (when it starts and ends) then show your doctor so they can analyze it and confirm things.
also talk to your mom because it could be genetic (maybe thats how hers was)

It's normal to have a screwy period when you first start but your body has had well enough time to adjust and get on a schedule.

You should really see your doctor now as there could be underlying problems. Stress, weight fluctuation, hormone imbalances, or even cysts on the ovaries ( possibly polycystic ovary syndrome) could be the reason(s) why your period is so irregular.

A professional will be able to tell you why your periods are still odd.
