I volunteer at an elementry school...

Question Posted Sunday March 2 2008, 7:34 pm

I'm fourteen years old, and I volunteer at the elementry school, with the after school children.

Lots of them seem really attached to me, but I'm worried they think of me more as there playmate... When I tell them to go stand in line, they won't listen to me, only the adults.

I want to be there friend, I love kids. But, I also need them to listen to me. :)

Any advice is great. And thanks in advanced.

I think you should act just like the adults. You have to punish them and talk to them like any adult would. Don't let them answer you back or something. You have to stand up to them and let them know your the boss. I hope I helped. let me know please. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

Well, I have to disagree about the puppy thing. Kids aren't like puppies. Puppies learn to obey. Children learn to listen, reason, and respect.

See, the problem is, you have presented yourself as a friend/playmate and not as a friend/playmate/authority figure.

When it comes to kids you can't always be nice. It would be wonderful if the world worked that way, but it doesn't.
Sometimes you have to take that friendly tone out of your voice and replace it with authority to get them to stand in line as they should.

Reason with them. Explain why it is important that they should listen to you. Kids are smarter than we think. They do understand reasoning.

I mean, what if there were a fire? They need to understand that by listening to you and standing in that line is important, especially in such a situation.

They won't think you are mean and not their friend. They will learn to respect that, though you are their friend, you are still an elder who needs to be listened to.

Talk to the adults who volunteer. I'm sure they could give you excellent advice and tips.

iv volunteered at an elementry school for a year. i learned that you have to treat them like a puppy soemtimes and just say no.or say i will stay in line with you. or we can play a game later if you are good for the rest of the day. dont make any threats cause then they get upset. dotn say DO WHAT I SAID OR I WILL HAVE TO TAKE YOU BACK TO CLASS. i doubt that you do that but...im just letting you know it doesnt work.. and its a bad example. and if they try to negotiate with you, just say no we NEED to do it like this. be stern.
