Most people who buy exercise equipment are all gung-ho about it for a couple weeks... and then the thing sits there gathering dust and taking up space. Your dad may not want you to waste your money on something that will end up not being used.
One alternative is to look in the want ads for a used one, which will be a lot cheaper. You'll find tons of them, and a lot of them will be practically brand new. If it's not real expensive, your dad may go for that.
If buying a new one is your only option, then find a way to convince your dad that you're serious about using one. Find a gym that has one and go there every day. Your dad will see that you're really dedicated to it (not to mention, he'll probably get tired of driving you to the gym), and he may give in and let you buy your own.

the good thing is that you can change the ramp incline/speed, or select a specific routine exercise program that's set up in the machine. you need to ease into it, but honestly both are good on the butt and quads, esp. when you do quick spurts of high intensity workouts on high incline, that'll do the trick :) you can buy an elliptical but run outside maybe.
hope i helped. [ plume's advice column | Ask plume A Question ]
LindaLou16 answered Monday February 18 2008, 12:02 am: My dear friend,
First of all, to answer your question: the elliptical is low-intensity and exercises your whole body. The treadmill is high-intensity (or can be) and will give your legs and butt a better exercise. Besides that, since it is cardiac, it is good for your heart.
But before you go against your father's wishes (I don't know how old you are), ask him why he doesn't want you to buy one. If it's a monetary issue, explain that fitness and good health is an investment that you are willing to make. If it's an issue of space, find some way to fit the treadmill/eliptical in without it being a nuisance. Other issues may arise but do what you can to convince your father, and show him that you are mature enough to make this decision.
