If I open and close my jaw, it randomly cracks or pops. It isn't loud [I'm probably the only one who can hear it] and it doesn't hurt at all whatsoever. People told me to look up TMJ. I don't really have any TMJ symptoms except one or two. I'm going to the oral surgeon in a few weeks for a wisdom teeth checkup so I can ask the doctor about it then. I'm just a bit worried because I thought it wasn't too serious since it wasn't painful and it never stopped me from chewing or anything like that. Has anyone had this and if so, what is it?? Thanks!!
I have the exact thing you have, and when I looked up TMJ, I only had a few of the symptoms. My clicking doesn't hurt either, and the idiotic idea that if it doesn't hurt don't fix it, is insane. It doesn't hurt because of your cartilage; it's blocking the bone on bone contact. However, because your jaw is now out of place, this cartilage is going to run down because of the new position until you get bone on bone contact, which is going to hurt like a bitch and will result in a need for surgery.
Now, what you should do about it. Talk to your dentist about it, but if your dentist tells you not to worry about it (like mine did) talk to a new one. Find a dentist that specializes in the jaw. That's what I did, and I now have a mouth guard to wear at night which is supposed to reset my jaw. Believe me, the clicking is not normal and will only get worse, until your jaw beings locking up for long periods of time (like mine does now).

So if you are a frquent gum chewer you may want to stop, and also, move your bottom jaw left and right SLIGHTLY. i did it to hard and couldn't chew for days. aidenisfire answered Wednesday February 13 2008, 1:16 pm: my jaw does that too, as does my mom. my mom actually has tmj but i don't. it's not really a big problem, nothing to worry about unless it starts causing you pain, which it sounds like it isn't. so as long as you mention it to the oral surgeon when you go you should be fine. It could be due to your wisdom teeth, or you could be developing early signs of TMJ. The doctor will be able to look and see if there is anything contributing to the popping. Usually, that does mean TMJ, however, everybody is unique and therefore, it could be nothing. Good luck. If it gets worse, or you start to experience any pain, then I would call your dentist and ask him/her about it. [ askallyanything's advice column | Ask askallyanything A Question ]
