Here's a link to the page concerning name changes on the social security site.

Basically, you do need to inform the social security office of your name change so that they can update your records properly, and they will give you a new card.
The procedure for changing your name will vary slightly depending on where you live, but it is going to require applying to the state court. I recommend searching for "name change" + "state" (replace the word "state" with the state where you live) to find the site with the exact instructions. (It should be a .gov site.) ]
You can legally change your name. Your social security number won't change.
I don't know why you would want to- your parents gave you that name, and your name is a life long gift. Your middle name is a part of your individuality. (There may be millions of Sara Smiths, but there may be only one Sara Skaborkilian Smith.)
I know, hard to see it that way if you hate it so. My husband hates his, too. He doesn't use it, he just signs his name using his middle initial only rather than his full middle name.
Realistically, nobody is going to know your middle name unless you tell them, anyhow. It isn't a name you use on a daily basis.
