Counseling and confidentiality

Question Posted Monday January 7 2008, 7:34 pm

17/f
I've been considering going to a counselor, but I have a few questions first.

I know that legally, the only thing they have to tell my parents is if I'm hurting myself or others.

But what about things that are illegal? Stealing things from work, smoking, drugs, drinking...would they tell anyone, even though they don't have an obligation to?

Also, are there any places that offer free counseling? I really can't afford to pay for it...

Thanks.

I trained as a Counsellor and I had to sign a confidentiality commitment not to divulge to anyone what was discussed unless it was harmful to the person or to others. I.E. sexual abuse of a minor, suicide or murder. I was not allowed to divulge without permission anything to do with drugs, theft or drinking. That is between the Counsellor and their client. The Counsellor can only try to persuade the client to confess - they cannot tell themselves.

Depending on which country you live in, you may be able to get free counselling through school or through the doctors surgery.

Good luck with your future.

I'm glad to see that you have a desire to change directions! Well, you may consider just going to the school counselor. They're willing to help any student as much as they can. And... sorry, but thay'll probably have to tell your parents about those things. Most people would consider drugs as something harmful to you, and taking things from someone else is also fairly serious. I hope that things work out for you.
