Pole Vaulting/Track

Question Posted Monday January 7 2008, 4:09 pm

I'm a tiny girl. I'm 4'11" and about 97 lbs. I really want to go out for spring track. Am I too short to do pole vaulting? If yes, what other events could i do if i am not much of a runner?

Height does not really have anything to do with pole vault. It has to do with your arm strength, flexibility, speed, and technique. Most of the pole vaulters on my team are no more than 5 feet tall and do very well because they are fast and strong.

Just to let you know though pole vault is a VERY complex sport. You have a lot to consentrate on; your arms, your speed, your leg counts, etc. All I can say is try it out and see if you enjoy it. Who knows, you may turn out to be very good at it.

I don't know what else you can do if you aren't much of a runner, because almost all events, except for throwing, involve hard running. But since you are so tiny, I do not believe throwing would be for you.

These are the events that are usually in track, sometimes more, sometimes less.
100m
200m
100m hurdles

300m hurdles

800m

Triple Jump

Just remember that it doesn't come naturally to all. If you want to be good, you will have to work hard for it.
