Anxiety

Question Posted Thursday January 3 2008, 3:51 pm

I am 14 years old girl and i get severe anxiety attacks frequently. I will be sitting in class and have to run out because I can't breath and my heart starts pounding and i feel like i'm going to pass out. I have a counslor i talk to but these panic / anxiety attacks occur regardless. In school they happen almost everyday and I try to go to the bathroom so i don't embarass myself. I have trouble falling asleep at night anticipating an anxiety at school the next day. I used to like school and i am an A+ student but now i am preoccupied with my anxiety. When i have an anxiety attack i feel like im going to die even though i know i won't. I like being around my parents because they give me a sense of comfort. What should i go about these anxiety attacks bc they are really taking over my life. I know i should deep breath / close my eyes when i have these attacks but when it happens i freak out and forget to do this. ADVICE PLEASEE THANKS SOOO MUCH

Thankyou for your question.

I can sympathize with you here. Panic attacks are not nice and I suffered from them for some unknown reason every couple of days for a few months, and my doctor didn't help at all.. which kind of made it worse in a way. They're horrible aren't they?
You're not alone though. They are very common.
I feel once you've had one, you're going to have more, because you're going to be scared of them happening again because they're basically not very nice! It's like a vicious cycle.

The thing you have to remember is panic attacks will not kill you etc.. I know you can feel like you're dying half the time, but you really won't.
I'm really glad you're getting help for them. I know it's hard to remember what to do when you're having one. Don't worry about embarrassing yourself - you won't. Just try to relax and don't let the panic attacks control you. Try your best to focus on your breathing - slow and controlled. Maybe even take a few sips of water. That helped me, because it took my mind off it a bit, then let me remember to breathe.

There are so many reasons for them happening. Do you know why you get them? If so, you need to get help for that particular reason, whether it being physical, mental, emotional etc.
There are medications out there to help, but it's better to beat the panic attacks alone, because your body can build a tolerance to the drug which can make you addicted and feel you NEED them. When you don't.

Your panic attacks should become less frequent within time. You just must remember nothing will happen to you, so there's NO reason to freak out when you're having one.
Focus on your work at school, your friends and try your hardest not to think about them.
It will get better, I promise.

u say u find comfort around your parents well then your friends should be a comfort to you also while yuor in your classes look to your friends and you can get a sense of comfort there too just like you do wiht your parents.
Every night before you go to sleep, close your eyes and visualise a massive hot air balloon in front of you.Beside you you have lots of sandbags, these sandbags represent your worries. Think about what it is that's making you so upset.Imagine yourself attaching these sand bags to the hot air balloon, and then cut the rope and watch your worries float away - you'll never have to see they again.
if that doesnt work, when I was in middle school I started having panic attacks. They were so scary to me having that awful feeling of dread, heart racing, racing thoughts... I went to the doctor and he put me on Xanax .025 3 times a day...I only take 1 a day and feel fine now...If you do have one just breathe in and out and keep telling yourself it is okay over and over...It helped me...
