Nova said it best. Microwaves heat by agitating water molecules in the tissue being cooked. Your body is 75-80% water.... so if you stick your hand into it, it WILL hurt. You will cook your hand.

If this very old microwave does not completely turn off when you open the door, GET A NEW ONE. All new microwaves should turn off when the door is opened. So long as it does, you are safe.

Most microwave ovens, like all other ovens, are safe so long as they are not defective. If you notice on the door of the oven, there is a metal grid. Well that grid keeps the waves inside.

In a nutshell, your new oven should be MUCH less dangerous than the one your mom uses. Urge your mother to replace the old one if it is indeed staying on when you open the door.

In a nutshell, microwave ovens works by agitating the water molecules in your food, thus causing them to bounce around in a frenzy, cause the surrounding area to heat extremely, thereby cooking your food.
Microwave ovens are safe. The Microwave (it's name says it all) is a short, intense wave. A microwave is not strong enough to cause the cells in your body to divide abnormally but can hurt you if you could some how stick your body into one. So, don't go sticking your hand in one while it's turned on LOL.
