Question Posted Thursday December 27 2007, 11:18 pm
I am going to Costa Rica with my family, and we still have not set out a schedule. I am more of the go-with-the-flow type, so I rarely plan activities in advance, regardless of the situation. This time around ,however, is a bit different. We still need to decide on which areas to see, where to stay, etc.
For anyone who is familiar with Costa Rica, either through traveling or living there, any information on the following is appreciated:
- Which parts of the country (cities, sites, etc.) do you recommend the most? We would love to just see nature, beaches, etc., and as much as possible, try to stay away from the crowds.
-What is the transportation like there? Which mode is preferred?
- What activities do you recommend? Although I don't want to pack our schedule too much (we would love to just relax too), I think it would still be great to experience some fun things too.

Monteverde- its waaay up in the mountains, and has a really cool rainforest with guided hikes. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
There are also some really cool canopy tours (zip lines).
Arenal-its right next to a volcano. Are natural hot springs that make great hot tubs, its really cool. At night if you look to the mountain you can see it glowing orange. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
We stayed at the Tabacon hotel, REALLY nice, but pricey.
You asked about transportation-Renting a car is the best way, just make sure you have a few good maps, and advice from hotel staff on how to get where your going next. If you rent a car go for a Honda CR-V, or a Toyota RAV-4, trust me, it you do anything off the main roads (which is the most fun)you'll need four wheel drive.
