the sand paper idea is good
one of my friends used to use a lead pencil and pull on the strings though i personally havent tried that

ive ripped my jeans before with sandpaper. they came out really good. you should try it =] .

Take a cheese grader to the places that you want ripped, it adds a great touch to them because then u can see the string and the sides of the hole that are ripped, and what i do is afterwards i bleach my jeans. they just look cooler that way.
