why is preterite spelled preterit sometimes? whats the difference?

We learned this in spanish because someone was wondering the same thing.
there is no difference, it just depends where you live.

It's just an alternative spelling. There is no difference in meaning. It can also be spelled "praeterite", and the meaning is still the same. (I hardly ever see it spelt this way though.)

Note that the spelling "preterit" is usually only used in the US. In other countries where English is used, it is more likely to be spelled "preterite".
