tongue piercing

Question Posted Tuesday November 20 2007, 9:11 pm

i'm 14/f/freshman, going to be 15 in february and i was thinking about asking to get my tongue pierced. it's something different and i read up on it, so even if i don't like it i could take it out and it could heal in days. what are some pros and cons of getting it done?

Your tounge will swell. Mine did for about a week. They use a long bar bell for the swelling period, so your mouth will feel all full of tounge and metal. This is why you want to avoid solid foods until the swelling goes down.

Also, you have to deal with the misery of that ball rubbing on the tender tissue beneath your tounge. It takes a week or so to toughen up.

If you don't like it, the hole can actually shrink away in a matter of hours. That happened to me 2 years after I had mine done when my plastic bar bell broke. (AVOID PLASTIC BAR BELLS)

Follow ALL care instructions they give you. The last place you need an infection is anywhere in your head. (Yes, this includes in your mouth...)

Before you plan to do this, make sure you can actually get it done at 15. I live in Kansas, and they won't even let you walk in the door, parent or no parent, until you are 16.

Like the other person said, there really are no pros. It is a personal preference.

Cons
-Will hurt for a few days after and you won't really be able to eat solid foods
-You produce more saliva
-It can get infected
-Cause inflammation
-It can damage your teeth if it is badly placed or hits against them
-Can cause your gums to shrink
(the last 2 aren't very common - but it's something you should take into consideration as it does happen)

There aren't necessarily any pros apart from having a bit of metal in your mouth if you're into that.. Everyone has their own reasons for wanting it done.
