People say that because it was originally recorded by Switchfoot, and Mandy Moore did a cover of the song.

As Laura Michelle said below,
people probably get confused since Switchfoot did a lot with the music in the movie this song was sung in aka A Walk To Remember =D

Many Moore sang the song Only Hope in the movie A Walk to Remember.
Since Switchfoot wrote AND sang practically every other song in that movie (and on the sountrack) that's probably where the confusion comes from.
