I don't want to take part.

Question Posted Friday October 26 2007, 1:23 pm

I'm a writer...An amateur one, anyway.
I'm a sophomore. Well, at my school, there's a creative writing class. I'm part of it. I just wanted to join to get an easier class (because I can write.)
Now, they like my stories. And they're pressuring me to join clubs and contests and write more and more.
I'm not ready for that. I don't want this kind of pressure. I get enough craploads of homework from other classes and now this?
The thing is..they're all so close, the other creative writing students (in the clubs and all) and I'm more of a reserved individual. I don't want to take part. I'll do the school work, sure. But I only write for myself at any other time. The clubs/contests are volunatry. You don't have to take part. But they pressure me. And I don't want it at all.
Am I completely wrong to think this way?

Your teacher knows you have a talent that needs to be cultivated and not squandered. They probably know by now that you are an introvert. These people want you to come out of your shell and share your gift.

They're pressuring you because they know you've "got it" and shouldn't keep your talents hidden. You have no idea obviously how good you are nor that many people cannot write and dream of having your gift.

You're fearful of falling on your ass around these other students and your instructor. This is why you tell yourself you can only write for yourself and not others.

These people want to challenge that and are there for you. C'mon take a risk. Join their club and if you turn out hating it leave after giving it a go.

Tell your teacher how you feel about your writing and your confidence and that you only do it for yourself and not others to read. See what he/she says Entering a contest is fine as it's an experience and you could win.

But, if you don't want to try the club out and the contests then nobody is stopping you. Just tell them you aren't in to that right now and have too much on your plate. Reasonable people will understand.

However, I think your real problem is fear of being unable to impress people or be a great writer or get anything out of this. you have a gift, they sat up an noticed so don't waste it. The stuff you write just for yourself is so good it's caught their attention and wanting more. Don't give up on it.

No, you're not. There's no reason for you to do something you don't want to. If you're good at something, show it off... but don't pressure yourself into doing more than you can handle, because then you'll just get sick of it and you just won't wanna do it at all. Anyone pressure you, just politely decline, and if they still won't leave you alone, explain what you just did=]
