can't import movies onto itunes

I downloaded a movie (not on itunes) but I can't seem to import it there. what's wrong???

-Download and install mediacoder candidate release: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
-Open mediacoder and "add" the video file you just downloaded
-Click "..." in the upper right and choose your desktop.
-Click "extension"
-Click the "apple iPod" link under the second picture.
-Click "start".
-The video file is now on your desktop and you can move it to itunes normally

Its the wrong file type, in the advanced section of itunes there is an option (or so i heard, never used it) to change files to Mpeg-4 (the right file type). or you can just google "movie converter" in google and look around until you find one you like.
