Well, this guy, Alex, really hates me. I am not exaggerating. He would do anything to ruin my reputation. I have never been affiliated with him as friends or lovers, and have never spread rumors about him or anything. I did ask out his best friend last year, who declined, but that is totally in the past, and besides, I can't see why he would hate me so much for it anyway. I just don't know why he hates me so much.

My friend's worst enemy actually happened to like her. Of course since he was horrible to her, they never went out, 'cause she didn't like him...but beside the point!
Now, that's just one option I can think of. The other is something was said to him that had lead him to hate you. Something, you probably didn't even know happened. Could have been a rumor that YOU started a rumor.
And, I found it's reeeeaaally effective to find out why someone's mad at you by pretending your someone else on AOL (or another messaging product) and find out that dirty way. Hey, it works. =) [ Buttacup's advice column | Ask Buttacup A Question ]

The only person who knows why he hates you is him, and you can ask him, but would he really say or would he just say something hurtful? I'm sure it would be the latter of the two.
You need to realize that some jerk's opinion shouldn't mean anything to you. Why should what he thinks of you affect your life?
