do stores have to ask for permission from the artist to play their song in their store?

what about like, abercrombie? cos i know they also stream their music on their website too.

They do need permission. I used to work for Abercrombie, and one season we had to pull the playlist & play something from a different season because there was some sort of dispute over one of the songs, because apparently the artist hadn't been paid properly by the person who made the remix or something.

They may also purchase disks with certain songs on them to play in the store. That being the case, they have paid the artist, so I would assume that they wouldn't need permission.

As for putting it on their website, they surely have to get permission for that. But I'm not really certain.

Next time you are in the store, ask the manager. They can probably tell you.

If they use a regular radio station, they don't. If they make their own radio station, they have to pay a certain amount of money to the artists (though they don't have to get their permission).
