Donating Organs.

Question Posted Friday September 28 2007, 1:01 am

Hey, me and my sister got on the conversation topic of donating organs. My sister really wants to be able to help someone and donate a kidney. She's only 16 years old, so I think its illegal, unless you have a family memeber that needs it?

I also wanted to consider something, like bone marrow, but I'm only 14. Any suggestions?

I was reading that a lot of people die because no one will donate Organs.

Thanks.

Thankfully she has 2 years before she can do something like this without parental consent. Hopefully the intervening two years will allow her to grow up a bit and get some perspective.

If you want to donate something, donate blood and plasma. Unlike a kidney (which you can only donate once) you can donate blood and plasma regularly, helping many, many people. At the same time, you suffer no effects on your quality of life. And the kidney is quite neccesary for keeping blood thats donatable.

You know, removing waste and all that.

Its not that "alot of people die because people wont donate organs"

Its "many people suffer some kind of medical problem that can only be corrected with an organ that probably has to come from someone else who died"

Kidney is the only commonly donated organ that a live donor can give to another.

Usually its liver, heart, lungs, , things like that. Things that one person must die for another to have.

Give blood. Volunteer with habitat for humanity. Dont cut pieces out of yourself to help one person.

I will state that this is my personal opinion. Its what I believe.

I believe that people should be good to one other. I believe we should strive to make everyones life better.

But I think that we should also recognize that there is a point to which it is not worth going to help someone.

Its not worth dying to protect someone from a broken leg. Its not worth losing one of two kidneys (which I use every day) to save the life of someone I dont know.

More specifically, its not worth it to me.

If you all are interested in donating organs, talk to your doctor. Like theymos said, there could be complications with your young age.
What is illegal is not donating, but SELLING organs.

Something else you can do, is when you get your drivers license, tell the DMV you wish to be an organ donor in the event of your death. They will put a "DONOR" sticker on your license. (Assuming you live in the US)

It's not illegal, but doctors won't do it until you're 25. Any younger and there can be deadly complications.
