tampon

Question Posted Thursday September 13 2007, 6:27 pm

Okay so I had to go swimming with my period yesterday. I never tried a tampon before. I wasn't scared when trying to put it in. I just don't get how!! I read the directions and stuff but I just don't get it. Does it like, slide in? I kept pushing in all different spots but it's like it wouldn't go in. I want to start using tampons but I'm just not sure. When I thought I had it in, like 1/4 of a cm of it was hanging out along with the string, but it took soo long to do that, so I just left it in there and went swimming. It felt SO weird swimming, maybe cause it was my first time with a tampon, or it wasn't in right. When I took it out about 3-3 1/2 hours later, it sort of unfolded at the top, and there was like a very very tiny amount of blood on my underwear. I just need help in how to put it in the right way!!

Some tampons are just harder to put in than others. Cardboard can be pretty difficult for some, so I always suggest plastic. When I was starting out I was lost too- the key is to rwlax and take some breaths so your body can relax. Your vagina is like any other muscle on your body and can tighten up and make it harder for you to slide in a tampon. So breathing is key.
For some slightly crouching or bending in a squat can help you slide it in.
I find the easiest and best tampon to use is Tampax Pearl. Its a little more expensive, but so worth it.

Goodluck.

- You could be putting it in incorrectly, when you buy tampons there is usually a small folded paper in the box that tells you how to use it, if not there are numerous places online with directions and drawn pictures, they're not graphic or anything so don't worry. When you've put it in correctly only the string should be hanging out- if it doesn't feel right then it's in wrong, but keep in mind that the first time you use them it's something new so your mind might tell you it doesn't feel right when it's actually been done properly. Just read the directions and if you have to use two or three without inserting them and see how they work.

- The tampon might be too big or too small, look around for different sizes and absorbency and see what works for you. Start with normal, and if it seems too big or it's too absorbent get a smaller size. If not, work your way up to higher absorbency.

- On the rare occasion that you can't get used to tampons there are alternatives such as not swimming or birth control which will cause your period to stop all together, I don't suggest the latter unless it's a must though and you need to see your doctor about it first because there are slight complications that go along with it.

Yeah! Though some people won't admit it, every girl goes through this. Unfortunatly everyones body is different so they can't really give you a step by step map of how it "should" be. First off and this might be to detailed but the first time you have it in and really have it in it will fell akward!!! But the most important thing to do IS RELAX!!!! Becuase everyones body is differnt. The Vagina can either slope up, or down, or stay stright. Given that information... try every way. It may hurt, and it may take a while, but this is just practice! The first time you said you hade it 1/4 of a cm, go for that spot again. If it begins to come in keep pushing it in until you almost get to the end of the tampon and you fingers have no where else to go, then insert the tampon. It will feel akward, but the best and easiest ones I think to use are Tampax pearl. Since they're plastic, its easier. Remeber this is practice, and don't get scared. Remeber woman are built to give births to things the size of WATERMELONS! A little tampon isn't going to hurt you. Practice and get comfortable with your body.
