There are silver ones that just have water in them and red ones that contain some chemicals. If the fire is a grease fire, or was aided by chemicals like that, don't use a water fire extinguisher! That will just spread the fire out. So really, you can use the red fire extinguishers whenever you want. That's probably what they were talking about and they just used clothes as an example. Like, you were cooking and got grease on your clothes and they caught on fire type thing. You can't use a water fire extinguisher for that. I hope that answers your question. :) [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]

Fire extinguishers will almost always ruin your clothes. Some fire extinguishers will burn your skin after prolonged contact, and could cause thin clothes to disintegrate. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
