I just say Hi! I'm not sure why, but I'm a really upbeat persona and I'm young so I just say hi or hello. I just let's people know your there. Usually they will just go back to there seat or whatever until you leave or if they wait that's fine too. Don't be embarrassed! It happens to everyone-all the time. And most likely the other person is more embarrassed. Or you can say Just a mintue if you want. The reason I like Hi is because it's not embarrassing. I know that sounds wierd but it makes it so it's not awkward because your not sounding like your embarrassed or that they're intruding. Going to the bathroom is just something you do and everyone does. No big deal. So your just acknowledging their prescence and their finding out yours. Do what you feel comfortable with and you think sounds right. If you're at a certain place more classy or with more mature people (like if your a teenager in a nice office for an interview or something) you might want to say something different. Like what the other people are saying. Occupied is good. It's kind of like my hi. That's what i do. I mean say something besides hi. Sorry this is so long and it's really funny because it's such a short question that aquires a short answer but I don't have anything better to do. lol :D

Ahhh, that can be soo awkward.

You could say "occupied!" or "someone's in here?" or "mmmm?" or "yes?"

Someone asked this quite a while ago and got quite a few responses, check it out:

I usually say "Excuse me, I'll be right out" or "Sorry, one moment please."

you dont have to say anything if the door is locked. they will try to open the door and wont be able to. if you want to say something you could say "somebody's in here" or, "this bathroom's not available right now."
