Sima answered Saturday August 18 2007, 1:59 pm: I promise that it's not that bad. I hate blood and needles, but I just got my tetanus shots last week. The nurse will inject the needle into your arm and when the fluid goes in, she'll take out the needle and immediately cover it with a bandaid. The first shot was OK, and I'm not gonna lie to you, the second one HURT. She pushed it in slower than the first, so maybe that's why it hurt. When I touched the spot on my arm over the bandaid, it was sore (like when you pull a muscle, or when your arm is just sore in general). The shot will hurt for 1-2 days (maximum) if you apply pressure to the spot where it was injected, and then it will go away.
Tell the nurse that you are scared of needles, and try not to look at the needle, just turn your head. Remember, the shots are there to help you from getting sick, not to hurt you. [ Sima's advice column | Ask Sima A Question ]
MAK answered Saturday August 18 2007, 1:40 pm: Whatever you do, do NOT look at the needles. Tell the nurse beforehand that you are scared of needles, and not to let you see them. She probably will start talking about a random subject as she prepares the area for the shots. For example, my nurse asked me what my favorite food was, and as I was thinking, she gave me the shot. It was all over before I even had time to react and think about it. If it doesn't seem like she is plannning to talk about some random subject, ask your mom to ask you random questions during the process of giving the shots.
orphans answered Saturday August 18 2007, 12:48 pm: I used to be the same way, so I know where you're coming from. I absoulutely HATED getting shots.
The thing is it's all mental and I know everyone probably tells you that, but it's true.
You freak yourself out at the thought of needles and the buildup until it actually happens scares you.
Right after the shot do you always think that wasn't so bad?
Well just don't think about it, distract yourself and just look at your Mom and before you know it it will be over! :]
I hope this helped, goodluck! [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
