it is a year. Y is considered a verb in words like, fly...you know when you typically don't have the traditional vowels in the word.

it's a year...yes "y" can be considered a vowel sometimes...but it never has "an" as a precedent. it's usually only considered a vowel when its silent. and even then its questionable.
