As Jack said--write something that you've experienced in person & it had a big impact or a forever lasting mark on you. Not one of those petty "My mom yelled at me!" or "M dad made me take out the trash" type things.

I guess writing songs and poems are 50/50 except for the musical part. I've always found it easier to write a poem about something I've experienced/something that I'm really hurt/have gotten hurt about.

Also, pleeeaaassseee don't make it cheesy. lol

Oh, lordy, do I have trouble with song writing myself... I must say it is quite hard.

Write what you know. As Camille and Jack both said below me, it makes the sound sound so much deeper if you really feel what you write.

As for writing melodies, what I tend to do is pick three chords and base the majority of the song off of that. You can use two extra chords in the chorus to make it more developed and change a few of the chords in the bridge.

Like Jack said below me- use experience- and words you understand. Make is different, put a twist on words- use word play- just let the pen and paper do the talking. It is much easier to write what you know, and only that:]

Good luck.

Don't write about something that you haven't experienced.

I've found that writing songs is much like writing poems; if you have experienced what you're writing about- it makes the passion and meaning much deeper- and therefore sounds/looks better.

So, write with passion and about emotions.
