Your biggest enemy is the source of your picking. When you notice you're doing it, check up on what you're doing at the same time. For me, it was a combination of not being challenged by school (which explained why all of my sores were on the left side of my head) and the stress of a public school environment. I just rode out the problems, though, and now I have hard scarring on my head. Had I enrolled in a more challenging, small-sized school I probably would have had the problem go away quicker.
The shampoo sucks, but you just have to get through it for the time being. There's also a really great tar-based topical medication that goes directly on the sores and forms a hard, but flexible shell around them to heal them if you leave it alone for a day or so. I believe it's called cyclocort. I got it from my dermatologist. I firmly suggest going to a dermatologist in combination with your doctor because he/she will be able to prescribe a more specific medication for your situation. Or wear hats if they're not around. just to keep your hands off your head. (wearing the hat too often however can be bad. so only do it when there's no one around)
also try keeping yourself busy. this picking at scabs sounds like a boredom habit. like how some people eat when there's nothing else to do. so ... plant a garden or something. buy puzzle books Sudoku. something just to keep your mind busy when there's nothing better to do.
pup answered Sunday August 5 2007, 1:44 pm: My advice for you is to consult your doctor to find out how you can make your scalp stop irritating you, and STOP PICKING THE SCABS!!!!!! Picking the scabs only makes your hair worse and will irritate it even more! [ pup's advice column | Ask pup A Question ]
