freshman volleyball tryouts

Question Posted Thursday August 2 2007, 6:28 pm

I'm going to volleyball tryouts for my freshman year the week of August 13-17 (school starts on the 16th). I've played soccer before on a rec. team but I'm not like the ultimate sporty girl. The only time that I've played volleyball was during the times that we played in gym. I have a really great advantage, though, and that is my height (5'8") and the ability to jump up and like set the ball.

What should I expect on the first day of tryouts? The sheet just basically says dress in a shirt, athletic shorts, clean tennis shoes, and hair must be put back away from the face. I've never really played volleyball for real, I'm a little nervous. Do you think I will be good as an actual player on the team?

Additional info, added Thursday August 2 2007, 6:29 pm:
I haven't really been like jogging/running and like exercising during the summer. I've been doing a lot of babysitting for my little brother, but there have been a few days where I've done like 50 crunches and stuff to tone my stomach a little. I'm not out of shape, and I'm like 131 lbs., so I'm definitely not fat. On my mile, I got 8:35, so what exactly should I expect on the first day? =/.

The first day will be a bit tough, I'm not going to lie. If you work out starting now, you'd be a lot better off.

When I tried out my freshmen year, I was really unprepared. I did nothing all summer, so I was completely out of shape. Run a mile and a half each day [or work up to it] and you'll be fine. Conditioning is the really hard part. Once you get to real practices, it isn't as bad.

I signed up two days late, but those two days, they had to run a mile in under ten minutes. You can, so you'll do alright.

When I got there, we stretched and ran two laps. Then, we went outside to the track and did the indian run [when you get in a line, then the last person in the line sprints up to the first person, then so on] for ten minutes [instead of the mile]. While doing that, we had to pass a ten pound volleyball around.

Then, we ran up the bleachers nine times; three times, the a thirty second break and continued.

After that, we just did drills. We did stations, one minute each. There were situps, jumping [for blocking], ski jumps, hitting, setting, things like that.

You deffinately need to know how to serve over hand. You most likely won't make the team unless you know how.

If you have a friend that plays volleyball, or one that'll just help you, that'd be a good idea. Bump it back and forth, serve to eachother, anything. Also, I had a little bit of roof above my garage, then my parents room a above it, but a little further back [if that makes sense] and I used to bump and serve the ball up there. It's a good way to brush up your skills.

Be really loud at practice. Call for the ball, cheer for your teammates, and tell them to be ready. Coaches love that. I'm really quiet and my coach HATED me for it.

And, you deffinately NEED kneepads. You can't show up without them. That wouldn't be good at all. Oh, and bring water! I forgot and I deffinately regretted it [it was 7 in the morning, hah].

Our conditioning went from 8-11, but if you weren't there by 8 and ready to go, the coaches would punish the entire team. Once school started, the were about two hours, everyday.

I think that's pretty much it. Remember-be loud and don't give up! If you have any other questions, let me know. :)

hey.

yay! i love volleyball.
i was on the team last year in
7th grade, so you guys might do
things that are different from
what we did, but here's how
our try outs went.

alright. first of all, you need a over hand serve to make the team. you need to play good on both front & back row. it's best if you had some experience because there will most likely be a lot of girls trying out that have had experience. the basics are:

-over hand serves
-under hand serves
-round house serves
-bumps
-sets
-back sets
-spikes
-passing
-diving

being tall is a good advantage, but don't depend on your height on making the team. you also have to run a lot at practices. we usually run a mile at every practice. you need to be able to get a really good jump in the front row to spike the ball. go for it, but don't be bummed out if you don't make it. it's honestly no big deal, just practice more. i think it would be a good idea to start practicing now. practice with friends. here are some websites that might help:

it's good to see a visual. go here to see videos:

remember, the power is all in your arms. you need to have really strong arms, especially to serve it overhand. i got lucky because my older cousin is a volleyball coach and i learned this all from her. good luck with the tryouts and i hope you make the team! ♥

heyy. i tried out for volleyball last year as a freshie so i know what i'm talking about.

first, to even be CONSIDERED to make it, we had to do a mile in under 9 minutes. if you havent ran in a while you should definately go out and practice.
we also did a lot of drills. we did blocking drills, serving drills, setting drills, and hitting lines. we got in groups of 3's and hit the ball to each other while the coaches judged us.
we also did a couple of short, no-point scrimmages.

before i go, im warning you, don't get overconfident because just because you're 5"8 it doesn't mean you're definately on the team. i was 5"10 when i tried out, and i had the same experience as you, and i didn't make it. i had been really confident i was going to make it just because of my height. i was really disappointed.

oh yeah, and it would help if you got some kneepads. i know they said you don't need any but they'll definately be impressed if you have them. and you'll look more professional!

good luck at your tryouts! =] send me a msg w/ additional questions if you want.

Volleyball is my FAVORITE sport so here are a few things i would guess are going to be going on at tryouts.

1. Bumping (passing with your forarms).
This will probably be with a partner back and forth with the coaches walking around to start. Then maybe some excersizes they set up to watch more closely.

2. Serving
Probably get some practice in with the coaches observing a little then possibly a game or warmup for closer observation.

3. Setting (passing the ball up with your finger tips, usually in order for someone to spike)
Same as before

4. Diving
5. Blocking
6. Spiking (the hardest of it all..for most people)

7. "Ready position" ALWAYS be ready. This means close to the ground knees bent arms extended watching the ball.

Good luck..any more questions..inbox is good
