I have a hard time in a certain part of making chords on the guitar- namely the barring... I don't know if that's what you guys know it as, but it's where you use one finger to press down on more than one string. I can do it a little, but it's really hard, especially when you're trying to press on all 6! Are there any hints, like changing the angle of my hand or something, to make it easier?

uisforukelele answered Monday July 30 2007, 9:41 am: there's not really anything you can do that will have an instantaneous effect. but if you keep trying to make the barred chords (you can try only barring a few strings at a time), you will build up your muscles in your fingers and it will be so much easier. i remember when i first started playing guitar and i couldn't make a chord for crap! and now i can because i kept practicing and my fingers got stronger (piano helps with that too). the only thing you can do is keep making the barred chords so it becomes easier. if you want to try a song that has a lot of barred chords, just to practice on, try jack johnson's "sitting, waiting, wishing". that's what i did, and i would sit down and play it every day and soon enough i could make the chords. hope i helped! PoppaBear answered Monday July 30 2007, 1:03 am: yes,it's called barring.
to do it properly (keep in mind not all of the most popular guitarists are known for their good technique.) you should start by trying only two strings. we'll say your low e and the a string. once you're strong enough to do that, add the d,then the g and so on. you also have four more free fingers to use to make the major and minor chords. just by learning a couple of patterns, you can make literally any major, minor, or 7th chord! those fingerings are very findable (if that's a word) from google.

But also see if you can fit both your index finger and middle finger in the fret. That way you can use both fingers.. when you get better you can choose the easier finger. Then maybe be able to use them all. =] [ KWeeks's advice column | Ask KWeeks A Question ]
