I Wished for Will Power.

Question Posted Friday July 27 2007, 5:04 pm

To start off, I have absolutely no will power or self control. I can't stick to anything. Especially when I tell myself I'm going to cut down on sweets and sodas, and the next day I'm sitting down enjoying some cookies. Then, I'll tell myself I'll walk everyday. And it's been three days, and I haven't done so. I need to learn how to get some self control. Any suggestions?

Self control is hard to obtain & it was hard for me to make mine strict, so to say. You need to write down a list of punishments and awards for everything you do right.

If you don't stick with the not eating sweets/soda, "punish" yourself by no TV for the day or two. Something like that. If you don't walk, make yourself walk double the next day for the one you missed.

If you don't eat sweets/sodas for a week, reward yourself with a healthy fruit salad or a "fake at home spa day" type thing. If you keep up with the walk for a week, reward yourself by letting yourself be a complete couch potato and TV hugger.

Do not under any circumstances reward yourself with something that contradicts what you're doing. For example, don't reward yourself with sweets/sodas or reward yourself with a day off from walking.

Have your whole family pitch in. Make a little contract with your parents that you will not eat sweets and help them remove sweets/sodas from "easy to get" places. Instead, replace the sweets and soda places with healthy fruits and veggies all washed and cut up, ready to eat =) And have your family walk with you.

I have the same problem. Someone else will surely tell you some conventional methods but you can also try these if they don't work out:

- bribe yourself somehow. treat yourself to a new purchase for every pound you lose
- instead of walking.. find something fun to do because walking/jogging/running gets boring unless you are walking where there's gorgeous scenery. and change it up. maybe hike one day and bike the next.
- get a buddy to do it with you - it helps!!! you guys can support each other
- eat so much junkfood one day you get so sick of it you dont want to touch it ever (not very practical but im putting this out there just in case. it's like working in mcdonald's so you're in a fastfood restaurant day after day and you get sick of the smell and want to stay away). also because if you think you want to stay on that diet you may deviate from the pattern. if you strictly forbid yourself you're going to eat more cookies. you can allow yourself to have a cookie a week or something because otherwise you'll probably give in and binge. or buy fatfree/sugarfree cookies at least?
- this is something you need to do for yourself. you will feel so much better when you experience exercise. dont think of it as looking good for other people because thats not enough to get you motivated and may lead you down the wrong path to anorexia/bulimia/etc. you gotta want it bad.
- walk in the mall or city mucho - you can simultaneously people watch! and always things going on there so it'd be fun too
- get your family to help. like put a lock on the fridge or something lol no, but they can help restrain you
- i saw in a movie i think that someone taped a picture of an overweight person or healthy weight person to the fridge to remind them of the journey
- chew gum constantly so your jaw hurts and you cant eat anymore
- drink so much liquids you get full from that (drink healthily though - skim milk or water maybe) so you dont get too full
- eat yummy healthy food. find out what veggies and fruit you do like. fiber is very filling. for meals - eat a big breakfast, good lunch, and little dinner. actually it is really better to eat little meals and snacks throughout the day to get your metabolism going but thats not very doable most days.
- lose weight camp? sometimes people gain the weight back but you can give it a try and other people there have the same goal so that helps
- fill your mind with a new hobby so you get so preoccupied you dont notice and obsess about food anymore. maybe something that involves group and exercise.
