Well, I play the violin. not exactly a band person, but I can probably help you. Yo're kind of lacking details here, but I'll do what I can.

Okay, the first thing you need to do is get the rhytm in your head. clap it with your hands, stump your foot, tap something. Whatever. Get the rhytm in your head. Then you try and sing it yourself. Don't play it. Just try and imagine what it would sound like either in your head or by humming it. Then play it really slowly.

I suggest you get a metronome with that gives you beats, a steady tone, and gives you the tuning screen. It's pretty expensive but it's very percise and very useful. Play your piece slow and try and memorize what everything feels like. As in play the same note or hold it in that exact spot for like 10 seconds. Take you hand off, etc. Then try and place it back in the same spot so you'l produce the same note. I knoww it seems silly and excruciatingly slow, but it's worth it. Anywhos, get one of those metronomes and practice staying in beat or use the tuner to get the right notes =)

Good luck and if what I just said didn't make sense at all, my inbox is always open =)

hi, i play sax and i've been in band for five years so i will probably be able to answer your question... however, can you give a little more info or send one to my inbox? like how long have you been in band, what do you play, et cetera?
i think i understand what you are saying. you know what the notes are, you know what the counting is, but as far as the actual sound goes, you need to hear the pitches before you can play it. in my band, the band director tunes us individually every day (150 people, it's a lot) so it's a little bit difficult for me because i need to hear a pitch to be able to play my tuning note. it's easiest for me when the first chair player tunes first, and then i can remember that pitch so i can play it. but ordinarily it would be difficult for me to just play it, especially in front of people. is this what your problem is? give me a little bit more info and i'll answer :)
