uisforukelele answered Saturday July 14 2007, 8:58 pm: many people do, though it's mainly kids that stay out of trouble and stuff. usually when you enter a scholarship contest or do something academic or have a teacher recommend you, you get letters in the mail from different programs. i took the sat in the 7th grade and i get all kinds of crap about boarding school and summer studies programs. i don't do any of that though. i did go to australia with the people to people student ambassador deal, and that is a legit program if you ever get anything from them. that's by teacher recommendation, though i think you can ask a teacher to recommend you. my guidance counselor at school thinks that it's fun to nominate me to every boring program ever so i get lots of useless stuff in the mail. LM answered Saturday July 14 2007, 5:30 pm: The leadership ones are often mailed to you after you're nominated by a teacher. I can tell you that conferences run by the CYLC [you might have gotten an invite to the NYLSC]- THOSE are legit and they're a great experience.
As for the pageant ones, they're usually mailed to you from the mailing list of magazines like Seventeen, CosmoGirl, and teenVogue. [ LM's advice column | Ask LM A Question ]
andalixsays answered Saturday July 14 2007, 3:44 pm: Not everyone, but it's not an exclusive thing. I've gotten them. They mail it to people who are on certain mailing lists, like ones who subscribe to a certain magazine. [ andalixsays's advice column | Ask andalixsays A Question ]
