you can probably tell your waiter to make the side salad a dinner portion. if they don't do it, i'm pretty sure they won't FORCE you to order something. so the answer is most-likely, yes, you can get a side dinner salad without ordering anything else. it sort of depends on which restaurant you go to. if you go to like, mcdonalds they won't care, but if you go to a really nice restaurant like ruth's chris steakhouse, then you might get into an awkward situation.
