Hair vitamins

Question Posted Friday June 29 2007, 9:30 am

Hey! Well I'm African-American (if that's of any help) and lately (the past few months) my hair has been breaking off in the back and my temples and it's now breaking into my main hair. I was wondering if hair vitamins provide in fast hair growth and make the hair healthy...if so, which one? Also, I'm about to get braids to help grow my borken-off areas so what are good ways/products to use to help grow my hair (i.e. braid spray, etc.)? Thanks a buchhhhhh!

I am not african american but i do know that Vitaman E is really good for hair, skin, and nails. I've been taking a Vitamin E supplement for about six weeks and my hair just has a healthier feel to it. You might want to also get your hair trimmed. If you have split ends a hair trim should be scheduled because there's no repairing split ends. They just continue to get worse over time and can even split to the roots of your hair! Yikes!

I am an African-American and here is what I know:
1. How you have a relaxer? If so, really tight braids and relaxers do not mix!!!! That will cause even more breakage.
2. Do you use hair oil? Use products like Wonder 8 Oil or Mizani or Kera Care, yes African-American people have to put oil in our hair because our hair does not produce oil whereas other ethnicities hair types do.
3. When you comb your hair start at the ends and work you way up, this will be less painful and less likely to break as much hair.
4.Usually hair vitamins help but they do not cause a significant amount of change to hair. How you treat your hair will determine how it will look.

I'm a white woman, but I hope I can help you! :)

The vitamins are a good idea. Now, nothing in the stores will make your hair grow any faster than nature already allows it (though they want you to think so...), but vitamins will definitely make it healthy again and make it stop breaking off.
(I did see an article where they say you can get a prescription if you have stunted hair growth.)

Use some deep conditioning treatments. I provided a link below that has a variety of treatments for African-American's hair. You can browse through the products and see if you find something you want to look for in a local store.

From what I've read researching this, that it is bad to shampoo to often (only shampoo every 5-7 days) and it is bad to under-condition your hair. (I'm sure you already know all that good stuff, but I just thought I would throw it in just in case you are shampooing frequently and not getting enough conditioning.)

The link below is for a hair remedy finder. From what I understand, you may want to avoid braids until your hair regains some health with vitamins.

This is also a good article. She says what vitamins are good to look for when you go shopping for hair care products (not brands, though).

Hope this helps! :)
