The instructions are on the back of the detergents you are using. They are usually pretty clear about everything.
There are some variations based on what kind of washer you use, so look inside the lid (since they usually print the instructions right inside the lid on top-loading washers)of the washer, or in the instructions if it is a front loading washing machine.
