Question Posted Monday June 18 2007, 6:32 pm

What do you guys think about parents reading personal things? I came back from being on AIM & left my convos up. I noticed that one of them was scrolled all the way up, which I did not do. My mom randomly sat down at the computer I'm guessing. I know what most of you might say. She is my mom & has a right to watch over her kids & I did leave the convo up, but shouldn't there be trust? I would trust her not to go through private conversations. It isn't the fact that I had something personal, but I was talking with one of my guy friends about his gf & I don't know, I think it's a bit rude & an invasion of privacy. I wouldn't go through her emails. If I talked to her about it, she would just say "what, what don't you want me to see." It isn't even that. It's a personal thing. I think everyone has their own right to privacy. Plus, im 17 years old. I'm not 13 & I can use the internet wisely. Any ideas? Thanks!

Well, it would be one thing if your mom had purposely gone to the computer, opened up your AIM, and started going through your messages. But since you left your convos open, in a way you can hardly blame her for being a little curious. If I found a family member's AIM convos up, or found a note or letter or diary laying open, it would be really hard to pass up the temptation of taking a quick peek! I'm not normally a nosey, snoopy person, but hey... if it's staring me in the face, I might be a little curious! So I don't think your mom was reading it because she doesn't trust you. It was just there.

But my advice is: if you don't want people reading your AIM convos, try not to leave them open. Of course, if you have other reasons to believe that your mom is spying on you or doesn't trust you, then you should probably sit down and talk to her about it. =]

While it is an invasion of privacy, you need to keep it in perspective before confronting your parents. Who does the computer belong to? Are you paying rent or living in your parents house for free? Do you know for sure she read it? All of it? Why? At seventeen and living at home you are legally still a child and they do not need permission to read whatever is on their own household computer. Also, your personal conversation was about your guy friend's girlfriend. The girlfriend might see you talking to her boyfriend as an insult to their privacy. It is all about perspective here, and parents are usually thinking in terms of protection, not in getting their jollies from their teens little dramas and conversations. Talk to them and tell them how you feel, but don't get cocky about it.

It's an invasion of privacy, you're right and when my siblings/parents do it I get pissed too.

They shouldn't be doing it, but there really isn't anything you can do to stop them.

HOWEVER:

AIM (I'm not sure about 6.1, I refuse to download it) has this nifty feature if you go on away. Click the "hide windows" option and they disappear like they're not there at all.

The only way anyone could read them is if they clicked 'back' in which case you would know for a fact someone is reading your stuff.

----

Confront your mom/whoever is doing this to you, I'm sure they don't understand that it offends you.
