I want to learn how to play guitar. i only have 300 dolars to work with. I want to know weather i should learn to play acoustic guitar or electric guitar first. And i have no idea where to buy it from do if you could give me an inexpencive brand name that would be good. Thanks
uisforukelele answered Monday June 18 2007, 8:46 pm: it really depends on what kind of music you're looking for. also, with your price range, i think that acoustic is better... you can get a good acoustic for 200 bucks, but with electric like the cheapest guitars (fender squier) are 200 bucks and then you have to buy an amp. they're also a little bit trickier. i would definitely recommend acoustic first for any type of music, though if you're really into punk or rock you might want to go with an electric... but keep in mind that if you want quality electric guitar stuff that it's going to cost you a lot. on the other hand, good acoustic guitars are taylor guitars and takamine guitars. you can go to a local music store (if you have a guitar center in your town that would be best) and ask the salesperson what guitar would be best. i personally like acoustic guitar better because if you start playing acoustic, you can play electric easier later. but if you start playing electric, it's more difficult to play an acoustic guitar. at least for me it is. if you go electric, go fender, gibson, or ernie ball. fender squier guitars are like 200 bucks, fender strats are like 400 bucks. i got my acoustic taylor guitar for like 100 bucks, and i like it just fine. i learned how to play that, and then i bought a fender stratocaster. good luck! fatallygorgeous answered Monday June 18 2007, 7:37 pm: Acoustic vs Electric is really a matter of personal preference. I happen to be a sucker for acoustic guitars, so that's what I bought. If you want something that won't hurt your fingers, you could even try a classical acoustic. They have nylon strings, so they don't leave your fingers feeling sore after you get done playing. If you have any friends who have guitars, see if they'll let you play theirs a bit, so you can get a feel of the different kinds of guitars out there & see if you have a preference.
I'd suggest looking for a guitar made by either Gibson or Fender. And definitely change the strings right away when you get it, because the factory strings are always really cheap.
And look up Gibson (especially the Epiphones) & Fender guitars. Some of them are wicked expensive, and others fall within your price range. You can get cheaper guitars than that, of course, but you run the risk of getting a cheaply made guitar that won't have a very nice sound. Gibson & Fender are both famous for the excellent quality, which is why I suggested them.
You might also look on ebay as well. That's actually where I bought my guitar. The list price was over $500, but I got it brand new for less than $200. [ fatallygorgeous's advice column | Ask fatallygorgeous A Question ]

I would suggest renting a guitar from a local music store instead of buying one right away. That way, you can see whether or not it's something you really want to pursue, and if it's not, then just have them stop billing you and return the guitar. If it is, then just find the cheapest guitar you can(that's not a total piece of junk) and buy it! [ die_romantic_xl3's advice column | Ask die_romantic_xl3 A Question ]
