How can I set myself apart as a singer? People such as Amy Winehouse and Regina Spektor have a distinct style. How would I go about developing my own... What could I possibly do that has not been done?
seriously have you ever listen to old motown stuff like marvin gaye jackson 5 natalie cole and smokey robinson? i mean im sure that unless you were born before 1983 you havent heard of them but once you listen to them you realize instancely where people like amy winehouse and john legend draw their insparation. in essence theyre just a products of their enviroment.

I just wanted to mention another singer who has her own unique path- Sarah Brightman.
So be like sarah brightman and just start recording songs that sound good in your voice from your favorite genre of music. Don't do anything that you don't think suits you.

Music has existed since before humans have existed. Sounds have repeated themselves so many times and so have singers. Your best bet is to just pick favortie singers and mesh their styles together. Hum songs to yourself in your head prefferebly while showering and yeah I know it sounds weird but it's when your most focused. By humming a song (that isn't one already existing) your pretty much expressing yourself without having to know how to play instruments, it shows you what style your mind truly is when it comes to music, and then find words make them up cuz they don't have to make sense just find a rythm for the song and notes that fit in, you will eventually find your own style, and as with anything just keep searching.
I'm sorry if this did not help you but I am just trying and this is my advice which means it isn't necessarily right but as a musician and singer myself, it is what works best for me. =) [ jimmay's advice column | Ask jimmay A Question ]

Because then you aren't setting yourself apart from others. You would be following the ideas of random people. Look at Amy Winehouse & Regina Spektor. Their voices are unique & their style of music isn't that bubblegum pop that a lot of singers are performing nowadays. What makes them so popular is sticking to what they love doing. They didn't have to change for any record company. They stuck with the style they liked & went with it. Fans love them for their originality & being comfortable in their own skin. Unfortunately, not many artists do this nowadays. They know money is important so they rather follow what companys tell them to do to become successful. Not saying this is completely negative. Everyone is just trying to make money. Amy Winehouse & Regina Spektor just decided to try it their own way & were very successful. Their style in fashion also is what sets them aside from the basic musicians. Developing your own style would be following what you want to do, not what anyone else wants you to do.
