isis answered Saturday June 16 2007, 5:13 pm: Australia is one of the 54 British Commonwealth countries, some of which display the UK flag, and some that don't. For example, Canada is one of the ones that do not display the Union flag. New Zealand is another that does and so do the Fiji Islands.

KellyHappy answered Saturday June 16 2007, 4:51 pm: because austrailia used to be a penal colony for britain. meaning it used to be a colony that they put fugitives and criminals on. therefore, when austrailia got its freedom from britain, the majority of its citizens were british, and wanting to stay somewhat faithful to their origins, kept the british union jack on the flag.
