Australia is a Commonwealth Realm, which means that Queen Elizabeth II is the queen of Australia, as well as the UK and the other Commonwealth Realms . In other words, Australia is part of of the UK(but with a different prime minister, etc). ]
Australia is one of the 54 British Commonwealth countries, some of which display the UK flag, and some that don't. For example, Canada is one of the ones that do not display the Union flag. New Zealand is another that does and so do the Fiji Islands.
I have given you a website that lists the Commonwealth countries if you are interested.

because austrailia used to be a penal colony for britain. meaning it used to be a colony that they put fugitives and criminals on. therefore, when austrailia got its freedom from britain, the majority of its citizens were british, and wanting to stay somewhat faithful to their origins, kept the british union jack on the flag.
thats also why the accents of britain and australia are so similar ]
