dog worries

Question Posted Friday June 15 2007, 6:16 pm

My dog has been acting really strange. Normally, she does things like this:
-sleeps on my bed, or in the living room
-plays with the toys on her bed
-barks at animals that walk by from either the front room window or the sliding glass door that looks out over the backyard [& we live on a corner]
-plays with you when you call her
-runs around outside when my dad goes out there

But lately she's been acting like this:
-not barking when she sees other animals
-laying under the computer desk when I sit here
-just basically laying around
-when I tell her to jump up on me, like I'm standing & pat my thighs, she just sits & looks at me
-when I call her up onto my bed, she just lays next to it like she's scared
-lays in the grass when we let her outside without the chain on [we have no fence]

I don't know why she's acting so bored, timid, & such. The only major difference in our lives is that my dad, who usually runs with her every couple days, got surgery & can't for a while. But I've tried taking her on walks every day or every other day to make sure she gets exercise/fresh air.

Is this just normal or is there something to be checked out?

It depends on how old your dog is. When dogs are around 1-4 years old, they usually jump and play and have fun. But when they start calming down and dont play fetch anymore and arent that fun, its just like with old people. You probably wouldnt see an old man running arouund playing tag or somthing would you? Same thing with dogs. All dogs eventually get to old and mature for that stuff.

Now if your dog is pretty young and strong, you might want to get that checked out just in case. And even if it is because your dog is a little old, you still might want to get that checked just to be safe. I hope I helped a little andif not, Please let me know. Good luck!

My dog started doing this recently, so I took him to the vets. The vet said that he had hurt his back and moving around was causing a lot of pain. He then had to have medication and total bed rest, but he's recovered now.

I'm not saying this is what is wrong with your dog, just one of the possibilities. She really does need to get checked over by your vet to know for sure. She could just be pining for the loss of her usual routine, but is it really worth taking that chance with her health?

Well, you didn't mention her age so I don't know if that could be a reason as to why she's acting so different. Perhaps she's just not feeling too good, has an upset stomach or a cold(because thats how my cat acts when she's sick...she just hides & doesnt act "normal"). But it also could be the fact that her routine is messed up since your dad had surgery, maybe that was something she looked forward to each day & now things seem out of routine. Who knows? But if it gets more serious(like she stops eating) and it lasts longer then you might wanna take her to the vet in case(if you're that concerned).
Well i hope she goes back to actin normal.
best of luck
