go to www.purevolume.com
A lot of indie & unknown bands will put up their songs to be downloaded for free.
I have discovered a LOT of amazing bands on that site over the years, & some of them have even gone on to become quite famous (Fall Out Boy, Cute Is What We Aim For, The Spill Canvas, etc.). It's really fun to find a great new band & then watch them get famous.
Plus, sometimes they'll post early demos when they're starting out, & then you won't be able to find those songs anywhere else once they "make it big", so it's always fun to have something most other people dont have.

that's illegal, man

i would recommend emusic for indie and rock and such. you have to use a credit card, but when you sign up you get 25 free songs, and all of them are compatible with ipods.

if that doesn't work, i would suggest itunes. downloading music for free is ILLEGAL.

or listen to internet radio. DainBramage is good.
