Okay, so I got my braces off the other day so obviously now I have retainers. What I want to know is, for people who've had them, did you ACTUALLY wear them 24/7? They hurt a little& are EXTREMELY annoying. I know I'll wear them to bed, & probably at home, but I don't want to wear them all the time at school/with friends.
So basically, I'm asking, did you wear them all the time or about 2/3 of the time & still were okay?
My brother told me he wore them basically at night & when he was at home & I know he's fine.
[Please don't preach to me about how I should do as my orthodontist says or whatever, she's kind of a psycho so I can't really trust her, plus they all say to wear them all the time but I know people don't...]

After that, only to bed. However, I had the plastic kind. My friend had a metal bar that went across her teeth, and she did wear it all the time. If you have the plastic kind and it hurts, give it time. If it's digging into your gums, use a nail file to file the edges down. And if your ortho is psychotic, you should report her and find a new one. Hope I helped!

The only reason they want you to wear them so much right now is that your teeth are prone to shifting back and undoing all the work the braces did. That'll lessen in time and then even if you miss a night or two, you'll be fine. Just don't decide not to wear them just yet because if you do and then you put them back in, they'll have to readjust your teeth and that is fairly painful, even for just a short time.
But really, you'll be fine if you only wear them at night or part of the time at home. [ BlackAngel's advice column | Ask BlackAngel A Question ]

I wore it at first and still do [very rarely though]. But besides that, it's been 2 years with practically no wearing of the retainer. And my teeth have hardly moved. Mainly just my front 2 teeth. So I would suggest wearing it, but not all the time. Maybe like 1 week a month or something. Maybe I'm just lucky and if that's the case, if you notice your teeth starting to move, wear it for awhile until they're back to normal.
sugarplum07 answered Monday June 4 2007, 11:02 pm: I got my braces off about 7 months ago. I only wear my retainer at night. I'm really self conscious about my retainer because it makes me talk with a lisp and it's really uncomfortable. So I just wear it to bed.
Try doing that for awhile and if your teeth start to get more crooked than usual, start wearing the retainer whenever you have downtime or are just sitting at home.
The retainers won't hurt forever, I promise. After you have the retainer in for at least five minutes, your mouth already starts adjusting and it won't be as sore. [ sugarplum07's advice column | Ask sugarplum07 A Question ]

If you don't wear it all day and night when your orthodontist told you to wear it 24/7, then your teeth will move. If you continue to only wear it for part of the day, your teeth will just stay crooked. And the only way they will be able to fix that is by making you wear the retainer all day to correct the teeth that moved. (I had something similar like this happen to me. It sucked.)
I know that it sucks to have to wear the retainer all day, but trust me, in the end it will be totally worth it. After all, this is only temporary, and that beautiful smile that you'll have at the end will be gorgeous and permanant :) [ skiier12345's advice column | Ask skiier12345 A Question ]
