It all depends on you & your genes. Everyone's different so it affects them in different ways. Some may feel bloated while others never have this symptom. Or others may have painful periods and others don't.
Weight gain or bloatedness around the stomach, ankles or wherever is caused by extra fluid in your body called water retention. To reduce the effects of this, it could be an idea to cut back on salty foods the week before your period.

Also, it depends on the person's body, as different people's genetic makeup can have different effects on how they lose or gain weight, even during a period. Most people just feel bloated or gain an extra pound or so from water retention, which can easily be solved with diurex or even midol, as some midol formulas contain diuretics.
