Don't say ballet is not a sport because in one way or another, it is. And so I'm pretty sure it goes under sports...but carrying on.
Anyways, I'm currently 14/f and finishing up 9th grade. I'll be turning 15 in July [I don't know if that helps squat to my question].
When I was 7 or 8, I took ballet for 3 months? And I ended up quitting because I got sick really easily and I wasn't exactly the patient little girl.
Now I want to take ballet again but I don't know if I should or shouldn't. Do you think it would be weird for a 14 year old girl that is almost 15 to start ballet from the very beginning? Should I even take ballet or not? If yes, will I be put in a class by age or experience/level? If by level, will I be in a class with little girls? What can I do ahead of time [way before any class starts] for ballet?

I have an okay body I guess but my legs aren't the typical thin ballet ones---well, if you put it that way, neither is my body. Will that affect the whole ballet thing because most ballet dancers I've seen are so thin.
Also, I'm not that good at flexibility. I mean, I do work on several times a week but that's about it. I can't do splits or any of that stuff. Will that affect it too?
Anyone know a good site that teaches ballet for free??. Want to answer more questions in the Health & Fitness category? Maybe give some free advice about: Sports? uisforukelele answered Thursday May 24 2007, 10:18 pm: honestly, if you really want to start taking ballet again, it really can't hurt you! and if you do other types of dance, it will definitely show that you've had some ballet. my mom was a dancer, and she can always tell the ballet girls apart from other dancers. you will probably be put in a class by experience/level. however, that doesn't mean you'll be with three year olds... i have a friend who just started ballet again (she's 15) and there are other people her age in her class, and they're at the same level as she is. it will really help if you start stretching every night. even every morning and night, if you have time. your body type sounds like it wouldn't hinder your dancing. i have friends in ballet who are all shapes and sizes, and they're all really good. ballet works different muscles in your legs than say, running or walking, so your legs might change a little in the way your muscles are toned. at least, that's what another one of my friends said... when she started taking ballet, her legs became a lot slimmer and a lot more muscular (not like big, just less fat and more muscles). in the beginning, if you're not really flexible it might be a little difficult, but if you really work on it, you will definitely be able to do your splits. whenever you watch tv, or do homework at night, just sit down on the floor and start stretching. it will help a whole bunch! i was never a dancer, but i had to perform a dance for a drama class i was in one time... it involved this high kick thing, and of course i'm not flexible at all, but i stretched like three times a day for a month and my kick was way higher. in a little while after you start stretching you will probably be able to do "six o clocks", which, if you're not familiar with, is basically when you do your splits on a wall (your head is facing the ground) and your legs are straight up and down, so it looks like a clock. so basically what i would work on, if i were you, would be stretching your legs, and maybe even some crunches here and there. but definitely continue stretching. good luck! isis answered Thursday May 24 2007, 5:56 pm: I took up ballet at the age of 11 and although I had to start with the younger ones, I very quickly progressed to the seniors. I was in several stage shows and had a great time. I eventually gave it up again when my asthma became a problem, but went back to it in my 30's, and still loved it. So, no I don't think it's weird at all and all ages can try it.
It is a great way to exercise and ballet dancers can be fitter and stronger than a lot of sports people. When you see them in professional productions and what they have to do, you can see why this is. Whether you start in the juniors or seniors is going to have to be the decision of the school you go to. They may have rules about this and they will also be able to judge your abilities compared to what your age group are doing.
Don't worry about your shape, it shouldn't stop you from taking part. I wouldn't recommend any sites for free ballet lessons, as you really do need to be supervised to ensure you are doing the exercises correctly. If you don't you could cause damage to your body. No one will expect you to be able to do the splits etc, that will come after a lot of practice, and again, they will show you how to do it so that you don't hurt yourself.
x_s_a_r_a_h_x answered Thursday May 24 2007, 4:56 pm: You could read up about ballet and try doing some exercise so that your body is ready for the new streins from muscles you've maybe not used in a while, then you'll find that you'll be able to do some of the moves better when you start.
You might be put in a beginners class, but I'm sure there would be one for your own age group, and even if you are with little girls for a bit, you'll advance quicker than them and you'll soon be with people of your own age.
If you're worried about your figure then take up exerise and that should help or eat more healthily, but to be honest, it doesn't matter what size you are. Everyone is able to do ballet and size doesn't matter at all.
