how can you really hear the ocean through a shell? is that even possible?

No, like everyone else said its just a myth. But the sound is really the blood rushing through ur ear and the shell just makes it echo.

haha no not at all. when you put your ear next to a sea shell, it's the same as putting it next to the opening of a water bottle or cup or anything like that. The pressure is different inside and it just makes a strange nooise. people just say it sounds like the sea because that used to be a very old myth, since waves crashing and the water sounds kind of like the sound of listening to anything hollow
