I used to be great at writing everything from essays to poetry to stories, but I lost my flare somewhere along the way.It used to come so naturally and everything that I wrote was good, but I took a break from it and now I just can't do it any more. Most of what I can come up with is mediocre at best, and when I do get on to something great it takes so much effort that it doesn't even matter to me.
Are there any exercises or anything that I can do to get my writing skills back up?

I realized though that the way I was writing it was like I was letting go of myself and letting my subconscious and/or my characters just dictate to me.
Freewriting is a way to tap into your subconscious again and let go of yourself - because you can't stop, and you can't correct. It also helps me clear my mind.
Open up a blank word document and just start babbling. Set a time, or stop when you have a conclusion.
Good luck!

but I am the same way
Just wait until you find something
that irks you everyday
Then pour out every word of hurt
or happiness you get
Then let all your feelings go
through some paper and a pen
lol.
Good luck.
Hope that I helped.
