Next week I'll be going on a New York trip with my band through school. I'm really excited!
I just have a few questions for anyone who lives there or perhaps has traveled there before:
1) Is it a bad idea to carry around a purse? Should I just keep my wallet in my pocket so no one can grab it and run off with it?
2) Do some people actually try to steal necklaces off your neck from right behind you?
3) Are there a lot of homeless people?
4) Has anyone tried any of the following restaurants: Chevy's Fresh Mex, ESPN Zone, B.B. Kings Blues Club and Grill, or Tavern on the Green? Are they any good?
5) What are some cool places to shop in Times Square?
6) When I take the ferry over to the Statue of Liberty, will it be freezing cold because of the water?
Anything other helpful info would be appreciated.

it's not bad to carry a purse around... i've never had one stolen or anything. buttt you might want to buy one of the knockoffs on the streetcorners so i guess you can start off with a wallet in your pocket.
ive never seen anything stolen off of someone's neck... it's not as ghetto as you think haha
ive only seen like a few homeless people there but i guess i haven't ben there enough times... it's not like a hobo every step you take. there's a lot of rich people there...
cool places to shop... tiffany's on 5 ave is cool.. the square is always too packed for me persoanlly.
as for temp... bring a light jacket cuz it's kinda windy.
other info- knock off purses are big... get a good fake tho. the corner shops are the best :)
have funn! <3 [ LoveNJstyle's advice column | Ask LoveNJstyle A Question ]

1) Times Square has a pretty high amount of larcenies so the possibility is always there, unlike what others have said. You can carry your purse, but locals and thieves alike can spot a tourist from a mile away so you should really leave your wallet in your front pocket.
2) Yes, just know your surroundings because it's a very beautiful/very intimidating place to be- especially your first time.
3) Yep. Not really in Times Square itself though, but they are there.
4) Chevy's is like a glorified Taco Bell but the rest of those places are pretty good. I suggest Stage Deli on 54th and 7th...just a few blocks up from TS.
5) It's Times Square; you'll find a lot of places to shop
6) It's May...it's not that cold.
Fair warning:
This isn't Montana or Jersey or Kentucky or wherever it is you are from. Very Very different lifestyle and atmosphere and EVERYTHING is expensive so be prepared for that and just be careful. You'll have a lot of fun so enjoy the city. [ MikeCFT's advice column | Ask MikeCFT A Question ]
meghannnx answered Saturday May 12 2007, 5:16 pm: i live just outside of the city in Jersey, and i go to the city all the time.
1) you dont have to worry about people stealing your purse. Sence you asked about times square i guess your going to manhatten, in which case, dont really worry about stealing.Just carry one that zippers, not one that like snap together at the top or whatever.
2) no one is going to try and steal the necklace off your neck. Not even New Yorkers are THAT dumb
3)There are homeless people. but they are harmless most of the time. Its sad to see them, but sence i guess it is your first time there, youll be completly taken by new york that you wont really notice the homeless.
4)Every single resturant in the city is amazing. Especially Tavern On the Green, absolutly beautiful.
5) Every place in Times Square is fun. i like the Hersey store and the M&M's store. =]
6) It wont be freesing on the ferry. I take to ferry to the city, and not even in the winter is it that cold. And your going in like may? june? no worries at all.
jadoretiffanie answered Saturday May 12 2007, 5:16 pm: 1. Do not carry a purse, they might steal it& run. Put your wallet in your front pocket! Not the back because if your bumped into someone can slit a hole real fast and it will fall, it's hard to believe but trust me.
2. I've never had that happen to me, but it's possible.
3. Sorta, it depend's what part of NY your in.
4. ESPN Zone= VERY GOOD. I've never been to any of the others, but Planet Hollywood is good too.
5. I didn't go to Times Square, sorry.
6. Depends on the weather, but if it's nice it will be chilly& if it's cold it will be freezing.
